When it comes to ensuring safety and compliance for any commercial building project in Houston, having a fire alarm system installed during the process is crucial. The installation involves several stages, from initial planning to the final inspection, which requires approved plans that you may already possess. In this blog, we will outline the steps involved in commercial fire alarm installation and what you can expect throughout the process, as well as how 1st Option Fire Protection can assist you. If you're interested in a free consultation, feel free to call us today at (346)528-5971.

The initial step begins with approved architectural plans in CAD format. If you’re working with a new building rather than an existing structure, a face-to-face meeting can be beneficial to discuss specific details. These approved architectural plans will provide us with a comprehensive layout of the property, including the building's intended use, occupancy rating, and fire marshal requirements, which are essential for the effective installation of the commercial fire alarm. Our team will take these approved plans and incorporate all fire alarm components with detailed descriptions, ensuring proper documentation and installation after receiving the necessary approvals.

Once approval from the local government is granted, a permit will be issued, and a permit fee must be paid. After obtaining the permit, we will order all the necessary components for the fire alarm system, and on-site installation will commence with wiring. Depending on the building's design, we will install the wires within the walls and/or ceiling, which may require the reinstallation of SheetRock. Despite the potential inconvenience, our experts will work efficiently to complete the initial setup. If our installation occurs before the ceiling is installed, we can run the wires through the ceiling easily. Once the wires are in place, the "rough-in phase" will be considered complete.

Following the wiring, fire panels and all other components of the fire alarm system will be installed, which may include smoke detectors, heat sensors, alarms, sirens, strobes, voice evacuation systems, and any other necessary devices.

At this stage, a master electrician will be needed to run a 120V wire from the fire alarm panel to the electrical panel. Sometimes, an additional breaker may need to be added as well. It’s preferable to have your own electrician, but if not, we can recommend one for you.

Once everything is set up and operational, our team of experts will program the system to ensure that all components communicate correctly with our call center, local fire departments, and the building owner, guaranteeing effective operation. After completing the programming of the fire panels and all devices to meet regulatory standards, a test will be conducted to ensure reliability. The final step in the fire installation process is scheduling an inspection by the Fire Marshal. Once the Fire Marshal completes the inspection and approves the system, the fire alarm installation process will be finalized.
